Ug, I Can't Think of the Name of that Thing

"Island of the Lambs! Bay of Pigs! The one with the conch shell!" ---Me, last night, increasingly frantic as I try to think of the name of a book I want to mention. I knew I wasn't getting it close to right, but I ALSO know how frustrating/pointless it is for someone to say "That book, that one with the... Ug. What IS that? It's right on the tip of my tongue. Hm. Hmmmm. Hm. DARN it, I can't think of it! What WAS that? Hm..."---so I say whatever I've got and hope the other person can help.

"Lord of the Flies" ---Paul, who has had to solve this particular book-title-thinking-of puzzle for me before.

I guessed it. The conch shell was a good tip.

A. has to find words for me an awful lot. I am starting to get worried!

He always has to correct me that the movie with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt is not "Mr. and Mrs. Jones," but the Smiths.

Gah.

I feel like if you say 'conch shell', you've already named Lord of the Flies, no need to actually remember! If you were at all worried about being frustrating and pointless, put your mind to rest - you'd have to be worlds more vague and wrong about your details.

I'm a librarian by trade and honestly, I guessed Lord of the Flies. so you must be good with the descriptions.

Hmm. Maybe I should read it. Should I?

I had images of Charades that made me giggle.
Also, I have a little PTSD from that book. (:-D

mamashine- I HATED the book. HATED it. But! Like many books considered classics and/or routinely taught in schools, it has wide application for shorthand/references. Like, last night I wanted to say to Paul that a situations was "like Lord of the Flies." And when I finally did manage to say that, he knew just what I was trying to say.

So I think I recommend reading it for THAT---and yet, it's a distressing book, and there are other, longer ways to express the same concept as "like Lord of the Flies."

HAHAHA - I totally got it. And I HATED THAT BOOK SO, SO MUCH. I put it down and swore I would not pick it up again at least 3 times before I finished it. (Unfortunately, it was required reading and I am WAY too much of a good girl to not do the required reading.)

Matt's ability to figure out what I mean when I say things like "you know, the one with that guy who was in the thing" is half the reason I married him.

I always have the hardest time remembering the name of Lord of the Flies also! Island of the conch pigs, etc. Have you seen this website http://www.loganberrybooks.com/solved.html

People write in with descriptions of books that they can't remember the title of, and he and people try to solve the puzzle. I've found some good stuff there. :)

Am trying really hard to remember if I've ever read the book. I do know I've seen the movie....but can't remember if I read it. Now that is frustrating.

I read that book many times in 8-10th grade. Late at night. It was a freezer book for me, actually. So distressing.
