Question: Childproofing the DVD Player

Edward will not (WILL! NOT!) stop changing DVDs in the DVD player. He takes a DVD out of the slot, puts it away, gets out a new one, puts it in the slot, repeat every 30 seconds. I'm trying to let the twins have as much time out of their playpen as possible, but he keeps ending up back in there because of this. I actually wouldn't mind if he occasionally changed the DVD, since he knows how, but it is seriously one after another, and once he cracked a DVD trying to get it out of the case, and sometimes he presses the "record" button, and so on. Any suggestions on how to keep him away from it? Preferably something CHEAP.

Here - get one of these.. http://www.kidsafeinc.com/-strse-73/child-proof-vcr-cover%2C/Detail.bok

It's a clear plastic shelf that slides under your dvd player (you use velcro to hold it in place) and they can't get to the buttons, but the remote still works. You'll have to remove it yourself everytime you want to play a DVD - but it works at least.

looks like my dang link got cut off

Just type in "dvd player clear plastic sheild" in google and you'll find it.

Hope this helps!

cheap = plastic chicken fencing + twist ties around whatever it is that the dvd player rests on. Or you can try taping a cardboard box over the thing with duct tape.

We have all of our player-type things in a TV stand that has a cabinet. It was bought at target for $99.

Our DVD player, Tivo and receiver are all in a laundry basekt under the TV. The remotes all still work through the vents in the laundry basket, but little fingers cant push buttons. To put a new DVD in, we just slide the basekt out and replace the DVD.

We ended up putting everything on the top of the entertainment center.

That is the ONLY way I could stop Ian from touching the DVD player.

Argh. Watching AJ mess with the DVD player has been the story of my life the last year. He only cracked one, but has scratched several. Hope you figure something out.

Wow, I'm going through this same thing with our radio! It sits on the floor since I had to remove most of our living room furniture so the little guy wouldn't bounce off any of its child-bruising surfaces. I was going to tell you to put a box over it as Penny suggested - now I know what to do with my radio! Now if only I could hide the houseplants...

I found this similar to what andreanna suggested:

Sorry that I cannot help you. Our DVD is up high to avoid all touching.

Totally unrelated - I've got a question for you. Remember Tending Violet? Any idea whether Joyce is writing elsewhere? I read her blog weekly at Babycenter too and miss her articles. I didn't know if you've found her somewhere else, because I sure haven't!

unplug it unless you are using it.

These have worked great for us... Cheap too!

I've heard of using a large clear acrylic picture frame. Slide the part that holds the picture under the DVD player (face down), so that the small stand portion covers up the buttons. You'll still be able to use the remote. Similar to the covers specifically made for that, but really cheap.

Omaha Mama: I don't know where she's gone! The BabyCenter site said to stay tuned and there'd be a new way to keep in follow Joyce and Violet's adventures--but it's been ages and I haven't seen any new information about it.

I believed that tune in crap too - and have tried. Babycenter LIED! Joyce is just GONE! I googled her name, thinking perhaps she'd show up at Blogger like Catherine Newman did. No such luck.

Post a site if you should ever come across her again!

I too have searched for Joyce with no luck. What is it with Babycenter? They keep blogs up under the current list for like six months after they're completed and totally trick people!
Also- just put the DVD player out of reach, that's all that works for us.

The plastic sheild thing didn't work for us because the kids were strong enough to pull it off. (Good news - they're learning about teamwork; bad news - they are strong.) So we just got a new entertainment center (well, used from freecycle) where we could put the dvd player and vcr higher up. Before that we put the superyard around the entertainment center so that they couldn't get near the TV. It would be like putting the TV/dvd player in the playpen instead of Edward. :-)

Yeah, you won't believe this, but I googled "Tending violet" and found your blog instead. So u too are looking for her, huh? I miss them big time. Violet and my daughter, are the same age, and Joyce's column was like a pillar of strength to me. Sniff, sniff.
